The study of small watercourses and their basins has been conducted to determine the causes of changes in water chemical structure and those of the hydrological regime. The urgency of the research is conditioned by the fact that small rivers are not regulated by the RosHydromet monitoring but they play a very important role in landscapes development. It is precisely small rivers that determine the chemical composition of water in medium-size and large rivers. The active economic utilization of small rivers results in their degradation which is expressed in siltation and drying up of river beds. The article presents an analysis of the situation with small rivers in the steppe zone of Orenburg Priuralye. The structure and condition of river beds and flood-lands, hydrological conditions and water development facilities are characterized. The study of hydrochemical indices of watercourses demonstrated their dependence on year seasons. For example, the maximum concentration of ammonium-ion and phosphates was observed on the river Lebyazhka in the spring period. The results of atom-absorbing spectroscopy of water samples are indicative of a considerable excess of admissible heavy metals content: lead – by 2–2.5 times, manganese – by 1.9–2.2 times, iron – by 1.7–1.9 times, copper – by 6–10 times. As result of analysis conducted it is concluded that lack of the system of responsibility regulation for the riparian territories of small watercourses and proper maintenance of the water development facilities can lead to serious changing for the worse the conditions of small rivers outflow formation and to the reduction of river water content. The plowing up degree and the conditions of river outflow regulation are to be determined by the necessity to maintain the basic features of the natural steppe rivers regime and the condition of water development facilities should be under regular control.
