The UN Economic Commission for Europe and the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS)  have prepared and published a Methodological Guide on the Safety of Hydraulic Structures under the regional project “Dam Safety in Central Asia: Capacity Building and Regional Cooperation”. This work serves as a contribution to implementation of the Aral Sea Basin Program for 2011-2015 (ASBP-3). Preparation and publishing of this Guide were arranged by the Executive Administration of IFAS in the Republic of Kazakhstan. 

The Methodological Guide addressed the issues of analysis of factors influencing the safety of hydraulic structures, as well as approaches to solution of problems occurring in assessment of reliability and safety of structures during design, construction, and operation phases. This Guide, undoubtedly, would be useful for hydraulic engineers dealing with the practical tasks of analysis, assessment, supervision, and prevention of accidents at hydraulic structures serving various purposes, as well as for researchers, lecturers, and students studying the issues of reliability and safety of hydraulic structures.
