The river catchments in Vologodsko-Tryazovetsk and Verkhnesukhon landscapes in Vologodskaya province were mapped using GIS-technologies, and the degree of development of the river basins was assessed by geoinformation analysis methods. To this end the satellite image of land surface was classified by using the ISODATA method into three classes: forests, agricultural land, and human settlements. 

A relationship between the degree of anthropogenic interventions and the biotic indices representing water quality according to the status of macrozoobenthos communities was derived.
