The textbook explains the basic hydrology, a science which studies natural waters on the Earth and their processes taking place in linkage in atmosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere under the impact of economic activity. It considers the main chemical and physical properties of natural water, physical patterns of hydrological processes, and hydrological cycle. Characteristics of hydrological processes in various water bodies, such as glaciers, groundwater, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, bogs, oceans, and seas are described. Information on water resources on the Earth, continents, and in Russia is provided. High emphasis is placed on the current global change of climate and hydrosphere, new data on man-caused changes in the regimes of rivers, lakes, and seas are given and analyzed, and the contemporary issues of water use and protection are described.
The textbook is designed for students who study in geography. It can be used also in the institutes that prepare students in the specializations, such as water transport, water management, hydrotechnology, etc.
