The Final report of the World Commission on Dams was issued in November 2000. Unfortunately, its materials and recommendations have not been accessible earlier for a wide circle of Russian professionals. Meanwhile, Russia now observes intensive development of hydropower. In this context, there is a need to find the ways how to reduce risks associated with the construction of new hydropower stations and improve performance of existing hydroschemes, taking into account the world’s experience and international standards of dam construction, while avoiding previous mistakes and emphasizing preservation of river and flood-plain ecosystems. 

The report would be useful for the staff of environmental organizations and experts of energy sector in Russia. It would be also of interest for decision makers in planning and management of energy, water and environmental sectors.
