Yakubov M.A., Yakubov Kh.E., Zainullo R. Methods for Assessing Quality of Collector-Drainage Water for Irrigation of Crops and Leaching of Land

The article analyzes methods and criteria for assessment of the quality of collector-drainage water used for irrigation in Central Asia.

By present, the world and local practices have not had official operational regulations on quality assessment of water to regulate their use for irrigation. Last years, the full chemical analysis of collector-drainage water was not made, only reduced analysis for determination of solid residue, chlorine and sulphates. Due to intensive wash-out of chlorides, most part of collector-drainage water (CDW) has become sulphate. Therefore, in order to improve reliability of CDW quality assessments for different natural-economic conditions, one may apply relationship of water salinity and chlorine-sulphate ratios. Based on the analysis of the most wide-spread methods and criteria for assessment of collector-drainage water quality, the authors think that the classification developed by SANIIRI Institute is the most suitable for estimating whether drainage water is usable or not under Central Asian conditions. This classification takes into account full chemical composition of water so that this kind of water brings less damage to irrigated land productivity.
