This report was prepared within the framework of the EU project "Harmonisation and approximation of standards and quality of water in Central Asia" and the UN project "Water Quality in Central Asia" (Harmonisation and approximation of water standards and norms in Central Asia and Water Quality in Central Asia) group of national experts. Discussion of the problems of modern quality management of surface water in the country and a preliminary draft report was conducted at national and regional seminars held in Bishkek, Almaty, Dushanbe and Ashgabat in 2008-2009 with concerned government agencies, representatives of scientific, industrial and governmental organizations.
