Modern Uzbekistan is a cultural mosaic, which has its roots in ancient Sogdiana, Bactria, Margilan, Shash, Khorezm, and Turan civilizations, which at various times under the influence of Persia, Arabia, China, Greece and other countries. There are about 29 million people in Uzbekistan (2011). There are more than 130 ethnic, tribal and linguistic groups, where Uzbeks make up more than three-quarters of the population and Uzbek is the state language.
