During the next decades due to melting glaciers in drylands of Central Asia and parts of the South American Andes could face water shortages. This is stated in the report of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the agency reports referring to UN radio. Since in these regions falls a small amount of rainfall, their water resources are replenished exclusively from the glaciers, in contrast to areas in Europe and Asia, where it rains often. Meanwhile, the document notes that because of global warming, glaciers of the Tien Shan and the Himalayas is diminishing rapidly.
